Call for Entries for the 6th Annual Flash Fiction Contest

Gilmore webThe Flash Fiction contest is open through Jan. 13, 2016. Prizes – $100 for senior (18 years and older) and $50 in the junior (under 18 years) division.

Flash fiction is original, previously unpublished fiction that is 250-500 words in length. Pick up the rules at the libraries or follow this link to the Winter Gathering Book Fair page.

Benjamin Gilmore is shown here reading his winning entry, ‘Scratch Scratch.’ Follow this link to read all the winning entries. The best story in each division will be read at Winter Gathering on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016.

Memories of Heart Mountain – an Internee’s Story

  • 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15, Powell library.
  • 9:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 16, Meeteetse School.
    • Sign up for a 1 p.m. Friday, Oct.16, a field trip from Meeteetse to the Heart Mountain Interpretive Center. The cost is $10 to ride the bus and admission for the 2 p.m. guided tour is $5 per person. Call the Meeteetse Recreation District to reserve a seat on the bus at 868-2603.
  • 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16, Cody library.

Sam Mihara’s wartime confinement at the Heart Mountain Relocation Center began when he was nine years old.  Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation photo at left.

Following the 1942 attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Government sequestered 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry living on the West Coast in California, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, Wyoming, and Arkansas.

At a free Memories of Heart Mountain program, Sam will tell the story of family and friends who lived with him in prison camp. Follow this link for More Info… .

Cat Urbigkit – TODAY in Meeteetse

Don’t miss Rancher, One Book Wyoming author and photographer Cat Urbigkit.

Cat’s books Brave Dogs, Gentle Dogs: How They Guard Sheep , The Guardian Team: On the Job with Rena and Roo and Shepherds of Coyote Rocks were selected for One Book Wyoming this year. All three books are available to check out at the libraries.

Cat will pass out folders, fact sheets and stickers for all kids at the program. The Wyoming State Library provided several copies of the bilingual edition of “Brave Dogs, Gentle Dogs” for some lucky kids.
