Park County Archivist Robyn Cutter will discuss the history of Cody area eateries; cafés, diners, bakeries, coffee shops, drive-ins, restaurants and, yes, some dives (1900 -2019) at  2 p.m. Saturday, November 16.

Well who doesn’t like a great donut? The Third and final program in the restaurant history covers the restaurants from Q-Z. So how about taking a look at the Spudnut Shop. This donut shop have several locations at the same time, at 1212 Sheridan Ave., inside the Cody Bowling Lanes on 12th St. where Gabby Barrus would get up early and go down to the lanes and make donuts, a freestanding building in the 1500 block of Sheridan Ave., and a free standing building on the west strip. Lloyd Bartlett had them
for most of the years.

The history of Cody area eateries; cafés, diners, bakeries, coffee shops, drive-ins and restaurants from 1900 -2019 will be explored by Park County Archivist Robyn Cutter at the Cody library. Her second program, 2 p.m.  Saturday, November 9, will cover restaurants that began with I-P.  

These are photos of Lindy’s Restaurant which was located at 875 Sheridan Ave. Lindy’s was in this location in 1967. By 1970 it became Mountain Inn, in 1971 it became Keller’s Kitchen, then in 1972 most people remember it as Eugene’s Pizza and in 1992 it became the Canyon Buffet. Take a trip back in time and share with us what you remember about these restaurants.

Robyn will discuss the hundreds of establishments she has so far researched at 2 p.m. on Saturdays November 9 & 16.

Announcing expanded space for our older patrons in the Wits and Wisdom room (aka the Teen Room) from, 9 a.m. – noon, Friday, Nov. 8. Coffee and pastries will be served. 

Weekdays, during the school year from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. the Wits and Wisdom room will be available to senior citizens for a variety of activities.

Shelly Waidelich, the Y.A. librarian for the Cody library, will offer computer access, TV, Blue Ray/DVD players and assistance with technological issues. She plans to organize games like bridge, euchre and dominos. “I’m making a place for my seniors to hang their hats,” Shelly said.

Shelly found that she had excess capacity, especially Sept. – May. So, she taught computer classes and tutored patrons in the mornings. Then, one day in 2015, she noticed Olive Yates at the public computers. Yates looked a little puzzled. Shelly offered to help Yates set up her email account. Yates became a regular for morning sessions on the teen room computers. She researched her family history on Ancestry.com. The library has a subscription. Yates went on to refresh her Spanish language skills online.

The library promotes equitable access for all. Lack of technological skills can hinder people and Shelly sought to address that deficit. She held Tech Rodeos, encouraged teen tech tutors and formalized Senior Computer Days. She manifested the library vision, “Inspiring, Enriching and Empowering” and made it fun.

Given new tools to pursue their passions, lifelong learners are unstoppable. People may need help with smart phones, tablets and laptop computers, but, a little encouragement goes a long way at any age.

As our late colleague, friend and mentor, Altamae Markham, said of the library, “This is the place that permits me to continue my education.”
