Award Winners in Park County Libraries

Last week the American Library Association announced the winners of its major literary awards, many of which are available (or will be soon!) through the Park County Library System.  The association gives out awards every year for the best books for children and young adults. You may well have heard of the John Newbery Medal, which goes to “the most outstanding contribution to children’s literature.” This year the honor went to Good Masters, Sweet Ladies: Voices from a Medieval Village. Set in an English village in 1255, the book consists of seventeen monologues (and a couple of dialogs) by children who reside in the village–everyone from the lord’s son to a homeless boy. The book was written for children to perform, but it works equally well as a book to read to yourself–entertaining enough to keep you going, informative enough to use for a school project.

Browsing Baskets at Cody Library

Browsing BasketsThe Friends of the Cody Library group recently purchased these “browsing baskets” for patrons’ convenience. A library patron can browse the stacks without trying to balance an unwieldy armful of books. The bright orange baskets are located to the right as you enter the interior doors to the library. Try one!

December New Books in Meeteetse

Fiction
Broken Heartland: A Mad Dog and Englishman Mystery by J.M. Hayes
“Mad Dog” is a born again Cheyenne, and Englishman is Sheriff English of Benteen County, Kansas. The Sheriff is up for reelection and is subject to a smear campaign from the Christian right, and, as if that wasn’t enough, he’s also dealing with a deputy who’s just crashed into a school bus, a hostage situation at the school, and something sinister going on at a farmhouse outside of town. This is one for those who like zany characters and multiple plots.

Three Sisters by James Doss
There’s something about mystery novels that seems to bring together peculiar characters. This one has a TV psychic; her sister, a woman who seems to have been attacked by a bear and is now dead; a third sister who is trying to woo her dead sister’s husband; and of course tribal investigator Charlie Moon; best friend, chief of police Scott Parris; and his Aunt Daisy, a shaman. With its Colorado setting, this one is a natural for fans of western Native American mysteries.
