Announcing the 2012-2013 Book/Film Discussion Series –
Cine of the Month Club

Our leader is Carol Bell. You know her from The Thistle and as one of Cody’s cultural gurus!

Books & movies are available for checkout now.

If you’re interested in participating in the discussions, we’d love to get your names, emails, and phone numbers to easily contact you. Just come in, sign a sheet at the front circulation desk at the Cody Library, grab a bookmark, and check out a book or movie!

The series’ discussions will be held September, October, November, and January.

Movies will be shown at 1:00 p.m. the second Thursdays of the month in Grizzly Hall at the library. The discussions will be held at 6:30 p.m. the third Thursdays of the month at the same place.

The themes of the books/films could signify four of the deadly sins: pride, lust, envy, greed.

 

SEPTEMBER – PRIDEBridge Over the River Kwai by Pierre Boulle
1957 movie, 2 discs, (title is a little different — Bridge on the River Kwai) stars Alec Guinness, William Holden.
Summary: British soldiers captured by the Japanese during World War II are forced to construct a strategic railroad bridge which a commando team is instructed by the British High Command to destroy.

OCTOBER – LUSTLolita by Vladimir Navokov
(1961 movie) directed by Stanley Kubrick, stars James Mason, Shelley Winters, Peter Sellers
Summary: Humbert, a divorced British professor, travels to small-town America for a teaching position. He allows himself to be swept into a relationship with Charlotte, whom he marries in order that he might pursue her 14-year-old daughter, Lolita.

NOVEMBER – ENVYThe Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith
(1999 movie) stars Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law
Summary: Tom Ripley is a calculating young man who believes it’s better to be a fake somebody than a real nobody. He’s hired to go to Italy to bring back the playboy son of a millionaire and soon is plunged into a daring scheme of duplicity, lies and murder.

JANUARY – GREEDAll the King’s Men by Robert Penn Warren
(1949 movie) All the king’s men / stars Broderick Crawford, John Ireland, and Mercedes McCambridge.
Summary: A political demagogue governor of a Southern State believes that every man has his price and that the end justifies the means. Based on the life of Huey Pierce Long, governor of Louisiana and senator.
Movie: 1:00 p.m., Thursday, January 10
Discussion: 6:30 p.m., Thursday, January 17

Take note of the copy number that’s not checked out. Click on the green Place Hold button and then be sure to click in the box next to the copy you want.
