Read Ingredients Discussion Series at Powell Library

Beginning in February, Powell Branch Library is pleased to host Read Ingredients, a reading and discussion series about food and foodways developed in conjunction with the Wyoming Humanities Council’s 2012 tour of “Key Ingredients,” a traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution. Discussions will be held on February 9, March 8, April 12, and May 3, at 6:00 p.m. in the Fireside Room. To register and borrow books, please visit the library. Registration is limited. Participants in Read Ingredients will read and discuss My Life in France by Julia Child and Alex Prud’Homme; Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver; The Food of a Younger Land, the Works Progress Administration’s collection of American food traditions recently edited by Mark Kurlansky; and Second Hoeing, a novel about Colorado sugar beet workers by Hope Williams Sykes. The series is designed to explore the two ingredients that are key to American cuisine – regional traditions and international influences.

Michael Konsmo returns to lead the discussions.

Knitting and Crocheting Class in Powell

Frances Clymer and Anna Sapp are back with our Knitting and Crocheting Class! This class will be a low-key environment for beginning to advanced knitters and crocheters who want to share tips with each other or start their first project. This craft program will continue once a month to give you time and space to work on your project with Frances and Anna for guidance and support. If you need supplies, a minimal fee will be charged for enough goodies to get you started. This class will be held on Tuesday, February 21, at 7:00 p.m. in the Fireside Room. Participants may join in at anytime, so even if you missed the first session it’s not too late! Please use the east entrance to the library.

Powell Family Movie Matinee

Showing in January is Dolphin Tale! Based on true events, this family film is about Winter, a young dolphin who lost her tail in a crab trap, and Sawyer the introverted 11-year-old boy who befriends her. Sawyer meets the rescued dolphin at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, a marine rehabilitation center where she lives. Sawyer rallies friends and family alike to save Winter by convincing a pioneering doctor to create a unique prosthetic appendage to restore the dolphin’s ability to swim. This film is rated PG and will be showing at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 21, in the Fireside Room. Children 7 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Winter Gathering 2012

The third annual Winter Gathering at the Park County Public Library in Cody is planned for Saturday, January 21, 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome for all or part of the free festivities. The western-themed community celebration of the arts is designed to appeal to all ages with entertaining and educational events. Highlights will include a nationally recognized author as keynote speaker, a book fair, music, dancing, and activities for children and teens. Donald Loren Hardy will present the keynote address at 2:00 p.m. in Grizzly Hall. His biography of Senator Al Simpson, Shooting from the Lip, is a best seller from the University of Oklahoma Press. At 1:00 p.m. in Grizzly Hall, the Friends of the Cody Library will be honored in an awards ceremony for their support of all library departments. The Yellowstone Harmony Chorus will serenade the honorees and also will perform throughout the day.

Book Talk with Gerald Meunier at Powell Library

Local author of Rogue Patriot: A Clay Holt Thriller will give a book talk on Thursday, January 12, at 6:30 p.m. in the Powell Branch Library Fireside Room. Admission is free. During his visit to the library, Gerald Meunier will discuss his book and writing process. We invite you to come and enjoy his perspective on the fiction genre. Refreshments will be served, and books will be available for purchase. Gerald Meunier currently lives in Park County Wyoming and is writing his forthcoming Clay Holt Thriller. Showing in December “Winnie the Pooh Movie 2011″ on Saturday, December 17, at 11:00 am. Pooh wakes up hungry, no honey! So he sets out on a journey. He finds a note from Christopher Robin that reads ” Gone out. Busy. Back soon.” But when Owl reads the note, he misreads its meaning which sends the whole gang on a wild quest to find Christopher Robin. Movie is rated-G and children 7 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Pay Your Fine with Food, Help Your Local Charity

Now through December 30, bring non-perishable, unexpired food donations, and we’ll forgive your fines to benefit area food banks and animal shelters.

Fines may be paid with pet food and with food for human consumption. Patrons are asked to bring enough food to be approximately equal in value to the amounts of their fines.

Human and pet food items brought to the Cody Library will be distributed to the Cody Cupboard or the Park County Animal Shelter. Items collected at the Powell Branch library will be taken to Loaves and Fishes or Caring for Powell Animals. Food gathered at the Meeteetse Branch library will go to the Meeteetse Cupboard or to the Park County Animal Shelter.

Only canned or packaged dry foods in good condition can be accepted. The libraries cannot accept homemade, home canned or expired items.

The food banks and animals shelters may also need other necessary, non-food items, such as toilet paper, blankets, or soap. Patrons are advised to contact the organizations for more information.

The Food for Fines exchange is meant to wipe out overdue fines, although those who prefer may still pay fines with money. Food cannot be given in replacement for amounts owed for lost or damaged books.

Because of the economic downturn, the library system is aware that charities probably need more donations than usual. For that reason, Food for Fines is starting earlier this year and will extend through December 30.

Powell Children’s Christmas Crafts

Children grades K-5 are invited to an afterschool program making “Children’s Christmas Crafts”. It will be held on Wednesday December 14 from 3:30-4:30 pm. A holiday snack will be provided.
