Create a Work of Art in Powell This Summer!

Altered Books – have you heard about them? Have you seen one? Do you create your own? Would you like to make one? If you answered, “Yes”, to any of these questions you are the person we are looking for. Powell Branch Library will be hosting three Altered Book programs throughout the summer, and we would love to see you there. The first one will be held at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, June 14, in the Fireside Room. If you already know about this wildly imaginitive art form bring all of your materials and come show off your skills. If you know nothing about it, but would love to learn, the library will be providing tools and supplies to get you started. There will be examples displayed by Wyoming artists, and staff available to help answer questions. This will be for all persons ages 12 and up. Refreshments will be served.

Powell Family Movie Matinee

Showing this month is Born to Be Wild! This film is an inspiring story of love, dedication and the remarkable bond between humans and animals. Born to Be Wild documents orphaned orangutans and elephants and the extraordinary people who rescue and raise them. This feature is rated G and will be showing at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 19 in the Fireside Room. Children 7 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Christi Mitchell: Wyoming Author Program at Cody and Powell

The Lunch Box Lady was published by three sisters who grew up in Powell: Christi Mitchell, Annette Marsico, who wrote the story, and Anita Mehus, who illustrated it.

This children’s book celebrates creativity, kindness, and nutrition with the antics of the heroine, Mabel.

Christi will visit Cody and Powell libraries the second week of May. She appears for Story Time Tuesday, May 8, from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at Cody with a book signing. Orders may be placed at the publisher’s website.

She will lead kids in a creative workshop in Powell on Wednesday, May 9 at 3:30 pm. Parents are encouraged to attend the whole program and enjoy the book-signing afterwards. Kids please sign-up for the workshop.

The book evolved from a classroom presentation that Christi designed to introduce children to healthy food choices. For more fun, visit Christi’s website.

Peggy Sundberg: Wyoming Author Program at Powell

Powell has the privilege of hosting Wyoming author, Peggy Sundberg, at 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 1 in the Fireside Room. Her Cowgirl Peg books use real horses and dogs to deliver important life messages to young readers. Her first book Lonesome the Little Horse has been used nationally in the “Red Ribbon” drug awareness school programs. Peggy will share her experiences as an author and will be available to sign books. Her books have been well received in Wyoming.

Showing in April is The Muppets! On vacation in Los Angeles, Walter, the world’s biggest Muppet fan, and his friends Gary and Mary from Smalltown, USA, discover the nefarious plan of oilman Tex Richman to raze the Muppet Theater and drill for the oil. To save the theater, Walter, Mary, and Gary help Kermit the frog reunite the Muppets, to save the theater. This film is rated PG and will be showing at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday April 21 in the Fireside Room. Children 7 and under must be accoupanied by an adult.

Powell Afterschool Program

Marynell Oechsner of Project Learning tree will present My Life as a Tree on Monday April 16 at 3:30 p.m. Come explore the life of a tree! Do you like cookies? Create a necklace out of a tree cookie! How cool! This program will include a snack and is for children Kindergarten-fifth grade. Contact the Children’s Department to sign-up in advance.
