Clymer’s Creatures spotted at the Biblio Bistro

Ten years ago Paul Clymer retired and began painting to teach himself patience. The work evolved into a passion and the creatures proliferated wildly in his studio. Made of found objects, lavishly embellished, a finished piece may take six months and hundreds of hours. Read a recent interview with Paul in the Sept. 23, 2011 Pulse. Read Ingredients Discussion Series at Powell Library

Beginning in February, Powell Branch Library is pleased to host Read Ingredients, a reading and discussion series about food and foodways developed in conjunction with the Wyoming Humanities Council’s 2012 tour of “Key Ingredients,” a traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution. Discussions will be held on February 9, March 8, April 12, and May 3, at 6:00 p.m. in the Fireside Room. To register and borrow books, please visit the library. Registration is limited. Participants in Read Ingredients will read and discuss My Life in France by Julia Child and Alex Prud’Homme; Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver; The Food of a Younger Land, the Works Progress Administration’s collection of American food traditions recently edited by Mark Kurlansky; and Second Hoeing, a novel about Colorado sugar beet workers by Hope Williams Sykes. The series is designed to explore the two ingredients that are key to American cuisine – regional traditions and international influences.

Michael Konsmo returns to lead the discussions.

Knitting and Crocheting Class in Powell

Frances Clymer and Anna Sapp are back with our Knitting and Crocheting Class! This class will be a low-key environment for beginning to advanced knitters and crocheters who want to share tips with each other or start their first project. This craft program will continue once a month to give you time and space to work on your project with Frances and Anna for guidance and support. If you need supplies, a minimal fee will be charged for enough goodies to get you started. This class will be held on Tuesday, February 21, at 7:00 p.m. in the Fireside Room. Participants may join in at anytime, so even if you missed the first session it’s not too late! Please use the east entrance to the library.

The Red Desert, Photographs by Martin Stupich

Martin Stupich’s photo entitled,“Newly filled trench with berm of excess soil, along forty-two-inch cross country gas pipeline right of way near Grenville Dome, Carbon County, Wyoming 2006,” illustrates human impact in the largest unfenced expanse in the lower 48 states, a 15,000 square mile basin in southern Wyoming known as the Red Desert. Stupich’s photo essay of the region will be on display at the Park County Public Library during January and February 2012. In 23 captioned photographs, he challenges the notion that this is a place of little value and encourages the viewer to look again at the wonder and wildness of the Red Desert. Art Express, University of Wyoming Art Museum outreach program, provides the exhibition to regional libraries, schools, community centers, galleries, and museums. Most of the cost is borne by UW’s Touring Exhibition Service celebrating 25 years of service throughout Wyoming. To learn more, visit www.uwyo.edu/artmuseum. Stupich collaborated with a team of scientists and scholars across varied disciplines to chronicle the fragility of a region under pressure by natural gas development. The resulting book, Red Desert History of Place is a collection of natural history essays edited by Annie Proulx and complemented by Stupich’s photo-essay. The book is shelved in the Park County Public Library under 507.787 RED DESERT.

Jeepers, Winter Gathering is almost here!

Powell Family Movie Matinee

Showing in January is Dolphin Tale! Based on true events, this family film is about Winter, a young dolphin who lost her tail in a crab trap, and Sawyer the introverted 11-year-old boy who befriends her. Sawyer meets the rescued dolphin at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, a marine rehabilitation center where she lives. Sawyer rallies friends and family alike to save Winter by convincing a pioneering doctor to create a unique prosthetic appendage to restore the dolphin’s ability to swim. This film is rated PG and will be showing at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 21, in the Fireside Room. Children 7 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Winter Gathering 2012

The third annual Winter Gathering at the Park County Public Library in Cody is planned for Saturday, January 21, 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome for all or part of the free festivities. The western-themed community celebration of the arts is designed to appeal to all ages with entertaining and educational events. Highlights will include a nationally recognized author as keynote speaker, a book fair, music, dancing, and activities for children and teens. Donald Loren Hardy will present the keynote address at 2:00 p.m. in Grizzly Hall. His biography of Senator Al Simpson, Shooting from the Lip, is a best seller from the University of Oklahoma Press. At 1:00 p.m. in Grizzly Hall, the Friends of the Cody Library will be honored in an awards ceremony for their support of all library departments. The Yellowstone Harmony Chorus will serenade the honorees and also will perform throughout the day.
