With the new year upon us, and the word “resolution” being thrown around, I thought it was an appropriate time to let you know about our new books that will help you in the pursuit of a “new” you. If you are anything like me you are beginning to dream of that perfectly landscaped yard that every year you promise yourself you’re going to have. I think I’ve found the book that will help that dream come true: The American Meadow Garden: Creating a Natural Alternative to the Traditional Lawn by John Greenlee. The book is filled with amazing ideas and beautiful photographs.

If you’re feeling less like a future landscaper and more like a future crafter let me recommend Vogue Knitting Shawls and Wraps. Knitting and crocheting have become the hot new craft. This book will help you have fun and stay warm during these last months of winter.

I know a lot of people resolve to lose weight this time of year, but I say, “Let’s eat cake instead! Doesn’t that sound like more fun anyway?” Anne Byrn’s book, The Cake Mix Doctor, is perfect for those times when you need a quick, unique dessert, or let’s face it, just when you want cake.

If your resolution revolves around wanting to read more, but you just can’t find the time, how about a book of short stories? The Best American Short Stories 2009 is a great way to feed your inner bookworm with tiny meals instead of a huge banquet. With the new year brings new possibilities. If you are in need of inspiration stop by the library, we’ll be happy to help!

It’s definitely a “don’t read with the lights out” kind of a book. Kenneth Cameron’s The Frightened Man is a historical thriller. It is set in London at the turn of the 20th century, and gives a new perspective on Jack the Ripper. These are but a few of our scary selections for the season. Make sure and check out our “Scary” Halloween displays when you’re at the Powell Branch Library!
