Rob Stothart, Northwest College Assistant Professor of English and English as a Second Language, will host a preview evening for two poets, Linda Bierds and Joy Harjo, who will come to Powell in the Fall.

The program will begin at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, July 21, in the Fireside Room at the Powell Branch Library. Rob will discuss both poets and give the audience a glimpse of things to come.Linda Bierds is this year’s author for the Winifred S. Wasden Memorial Reading. She will read her poetry at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, September 22, in the DeWitt Student Center Lounge.

Joy Harjo will read and perform her poetry at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, November 2, in the Nelson Performing Arts auditorium.

Rob believes the comment that captures Bierds’s work best comes from W. S. Merwin, the current poet laureate of the United States: “Bierds’s poems, with their constantly surprising delicacy and their language rich with insight and a sensuous music, radiate real power and authority and animal presence. Her true originality has no need of quirkiness to emphasize it, and the range of her interests, empathy, knowledge, and imagination is imposing.”

This is Joy Harjo’s second visit to Northwest College. She returns with her guitar accompanist Larry Mitchell and will perform with students from the Northwest College percussion program. Harjo laces her readings with saxophone riffs influenced by jazz artists such as John Coltrane and Art Pepper, as well as with passages on the traditional Native American flute.

Please join us in an evening of poetry, fun, and information! Refreshments will be served.

Since January, the art show has been on display at various public and private venues in Cody WY, as well as Billings MT. On-going programs presented at the Cody library focus on “access to Native America today” throughout the Heart Mountain area, as well as other areas in Wyoming and Montana. Through the month of July 2011, Randi Slaughter’s collection of photographs will be on display at the Powell Branch Library, 217 E 3rd St., Powell, WY.

Several illustrate the marvelous, intricate regalia worn by the Native Americans, as well as catching something of the rhythm of their dances. Randi’s four popular Buffalo Bill Historical Center (BBHC) Solstice Powwow regalia photos were featured in the Curly Bear Wagner Tribute traveling Indian art prints and photos exhibits this past year in Cody at the Park County Library and four financial institutions. Also on display will be a touch of the landscapes from Death Valley, Mono Lake and Yellowstone.

Wyoming has given Randi opportunities to learn more about the Native American culture. She has enjoyed meeting many of the participants at the annual Solstice Powwow held yearly at the BBHC in Cody. With the dancers’ permission, she has attempted to capture their pride and energy in photographs. Randi provides visual enticement to visitors still expecting to speak with Curly Bear, the former Plains Indian Museum board member and Powwow representative, to develop and deepen their cross-cultural connections.

As a background on Randi Slaughter, she is primarily a landscape photographer, although her background includes several years at the Science Museum of Virginia, where she was a darkroom assistant and photographer. Much of her photography at the Museum was candid portraits of people enjoying the museum, and group shots taken at a variety of fundraising events.

Randi began making photographs after graduating from New College with a Bachelor’s Degree in General Studies, evenly split between physics and fine arts. She enjoyed a long career in various aspects of Information Technology from programmer, systems programmer and manager to consultant.

With her husband, David, the Slaughters were drawn to the stark beauty of the West, and moved to Clark WY in June of 2005. Now, a pretty day, a promising sunrise, interesting weather, or just wanderlust will find Randi and David exploring their new neighborhood, which encompasses a good part of northwest Wyoming.

Additional works of Randi’s is also on display at the Open Range Gallery at 1201 Sheridan, in Cody, or visit her website at www.litewriter.com.
