Summer Reading 2011 is about to gear up at the Cody, Powell and Meeteetse libraries. The program extends from May 31 through July 31 at Cody, from May 31 through July 23 at Powell, and from June 6 through July 11 at Meeteetse.
Every child, from infants up through grade 12, is eligible to take part in the program. Pre-reading children of any age qualify when someone else reads to them.
Because Summer Reading is self-paced, children may sign up any time between the opening and closing dates. Books must be checked out from the library collections and be taken out of the library for at least one night.
This year’s theme, “One World, Many Stories”, emphasizes stories from around the world and exploration of other cultures.
When participants complete reading and activity challenges, they earn chances in the drawings for prizes that are awarded at the end of the program. Businesses and individuals in the communities and Friends of the Library groups donated the prizes.
Educational studies have shown that reading throughout the school vacation has proved to be essential for keeping up academic skills in preparation for entering the next grade.
Many special programs and activities accompany Summer Reading. For more information about schedules at each library, stop in or call the libraries (527-1884 for Cody, 754-8828 for Powell, or 868-2248 for Meeteetse). Information is also posted at www.parkcountylibrary.org at the “Kids” and “Teens” tabs.
