Vampires, Candy, And Manga

… Just some of the things you can find in the Teen Room’s new books! Here are write-ups of a few of our many, many recent buys. Come in and take a look at them.

Guinea Pig Scientists by Leslie Dendy — What happens to the human body when deprived of sunlight? How does radium exposure affect cell growth? What’s the hottest temperature that a human being can survive in? Scientists have found the answer to these questions, and they did it by using themselves as the test subjects. Discover the crazy things that scientists will subject themselves to, all in the name of learning.

Candyfreak: A Journey Through The Chocolate Underbelly Of America by Steve Almond — If you’ve ever enjoyed a candy bar, take a look at this close-up of American candies. Steve Almond is, as you might have guessed from the title, obsessed with the candy that we know and love. He’s a funny, smart guide across one of this nation’s most delicious industries.

Pepperland by Mark Delaney — When sixteen year old Star’s mother dies, nothing can make her feel okay. Then she finds an unsent letter from her mother to John Lennon, the Beatles’ music, and her own ability to play the guitar. To Star’s surprise, things begin to improve…

Eighth Grade Bites by Heather Brewer — Vladimir Tod hates the eighth grade. The school staff don’t get him, he can’t get the interest of the girl he’s crushing on, and -– oh yeah -– he’s half-vampire. On top of everything else, he has to figure out how to live in a world of “normal” people without anyone to guide him. If you’re into vampire fiction, you might enjoy this series.

Fullmetal Alchemist by Hiromu Arawaka — Brothers Edward and Alphonse became alchemists so that they could bring their mother back from the dead. Unfortunately, their attempt failed, and it ruined their bodies in the process. Now they will stop at nothing to find the Philosopher’s Stone that can restore them to health and reunite them with their mom. This manga is part of a popular series. If you’re a manga fan, let us know which other series you’d like to see here as well!
